Ready to start your own band? There are plenty of musicians out there willing to pursue a career in music with you, but how do you choose the right musician? Different musicians contribute different sounds to a band depending on their technical skills, innovations, and music diversity. For example, Metallica would not sound the way they do without James Hetfield, or Dream Theater would definitely not sound the same without the drumming talents of Mike Portnoy.

Here are some tips on how to narrow down your list of potential band members.

  1. Determine their level of commitment. You want a musician that is in the same commitment level as the rest of the band. Is the band a full-time thing or are you just jamming on occasions for fun on weekends? Musicians with a high level of commitment are always good but they can discouraged if the rest of the band is lazy and only wants to play at minimal times. Figure out how often the band should get together to play and then find musicians that can commit to that schedule.

  2. Technical abilities versus diversity. While technical abilities are important, there should be a good balance between music diversification as well. Anyone can pick up a guitar and shred like Yngwie Malmsteen with proper amount of practice picking the same notes over and over, but not everyone can play with such feel as Jimmi Hendrix.

  3. The right musician should enjoy playing the same music style as the rest of the band members.

  4. Compatibility with personality. Playing in a band is about having fun and you should be able to get along with all your band members off-stage. Generally speaking, you might get along with people within your age group better, so that might be something to consider when choosing musicians.

  5. Open-minded to other music genres. While this may not apply to every band, it might be good to consider if your band ever decides to change its musical direction.

  6. Band playing experience. Typically, the more band playing experience the better. There is a difference between self-taught musicians that practice at home by themselves and musicians that learn through others by playing in bands. Musicians with no band experience might have trouble with following songs since they are used to playing at home to album CD’s. In addition, if your band ever plans on performing live gigs, inexperienced musicians might have stage freight.

  7. Enthusiasm. Does the musician take the band seriously enough to prioritize it? Does the musician contribute to the band musically? Enthusiasm is shown if the they contribute a lot of ideas into the songs and take some extra to practice at home as well. If the musician is always running late to practices, does not contribute and only plays what they’re told to play, then chances are he/she is not very committed to the band.

Most couples have a song that is special to them and it is traditional for the bride and groom to start the wedding evening’s party by dancing to their chosen song (although this is not set in stone!).  Although this is not compulsory, it is a nice way to start the evening as all the wedding guests (including those who have just arrived for the evening) get to see the embarrassed couple gaze lovingly into each others eyes as they smooch around the dance floor to the flash of cameras.  In actual fact it’s not that embarrassing; a good wedding band will let the couple dance alone and then after a minute or so will invite everyone else up to join the bride and groom.  With the dance floor full of smooching couples it is then easy to go straight into a party or dance song and so the evening’s entertainment begins.

Whether or not the first song if played live by the wedding band or from the original CD will depend on a number of things; does the band already have the song in their set-list?  If not, are they prepared to learn it (assuming they have time)? If they are willing to learn it will they do it justice (a three-piece band that does pubs every weekend may be able to do a version of your special song, but will you be happy with their interpretation as your first dance)?

Ultimately the answer to this question is to talk to the band.  If you can arrange to see them play live you will get a good idea of their abilities based on how they cover the songs they already do.  Good bands always try to learn a couple’s first song if it is not already in their set-list, especially if it is a song that we can be used again. Good bands will also, however, have no hesitation in recommending that the original CD version be played if they thought that they could not learn it in time or not do it justice!  Beware of copyright issues though; bands will have this covered for live performances but if you want to play a CD, speak to the venue first to see if they are covered. You are unlikely to experience a problem with the publisher, but you never know!

I can’t think of a worse way to start someone’s special wedding evening than a band playing a very lame version of a song that should have special meaning to the bride and groom.  If you want to do that crazy killer-dance that is so often seen on YouTube, you’ll need a good quality dance band. Please note; the sooner you let the band know what you want then the more chance you have of getting it – don’t be disappointed if you ask the band 2 days before your wedding to learn a specific song only to be told that it is not going to happen! So plan ahead, think about what song both you and your partner would like that first dance to be, then find a good band and speak to them; they will generally have great advice for you.

Most of all? Just relax on the night, stare into your partners eyes and get everyone in the room gushing and weeping at the lovely romantic sight of you both dancing for the first time as husband and wife.

(Los Angeles) Prolific gold and platinum Los Angeles based singer/songwriter Harriet Schock is lending her narrative talents to the latest film directed by cinematic auteur Henry Jaglom. The feature, titled Irene in Time, is centered on the complex relationships between fathers and daughters, and the potential lifelong consequences of these complex bonds. Schock’s contributions include four songs she performs on screen in conjunction with the film’s star, Tanna Frederick.

The project evolved when Frederick joined the songstress and her band onstage at the venerable Los Angeles listening room Genghis Cohen. When Henry Jaglom attended the performance, he was inspired to create a film utilizing the songs as commentary. In addition to the quartet of on screen performances, Schock’s song “Dancing With My Father” from her American Romance CD is reprised, and the songwriter also appears on camera in multiple scenes.

Having previously contributed songs and underscore to the director’s Going Shopping and underscore to Hollywood Dreams, Irene in Time marks Schock’s third collaboration with Jaglom. Schock recalls their initial conversation. “He said, ‘I make movies because I can’t write songs,’ and I said, ‘I write songs because I can’t make movies.’”

Schock is currently completing production on her seventh studio release, Breakdown on Memory Lane, recorded with a stellar cast of Nashville musicians. “The title song is about remembering someone and being uplifted and paralyzed at the same time by that memory,” she says. In addition, she and Jaglom are also in discussions about another forthcoming film, Queen of the Lot.

Schock notes that she and Henry Jaglom share an artistic vision that is “…intensely personal. I’m not embarrassed to share something in lyrics that other women — or men – might confess, ‘I would never say that, but it’s exactly how I feel.’ Henry makes those kinds of films.”

Many of today’s young music lovers may not even know what sheet music is, and that’s a shame because band music is still one of the most beautiful forms of art available to us. And many of the ones that do know what concert band music or band music is, think that it is some magical pieces of writing that can only be read by accomplished musicians. Nothing further from the truth, sheet music is just a form of transcribing music using musical notes.

First, it was transcribed on parchments, later on paper, and recently by employing the use of computers and computer programs, it is finding its way to those interested in the form of .pdf files. The meaning of the term sheet in sheet music, is so that we can differentiate between this type of writings and standard writings which are considered to be presentations.

Sheet music is also referred to as score. Band music scores or sheet music scores have a wide variety of uses. The most basic definition of sheet music pieces are simply a form of helping musicians to reproduce a specific tune with the greatest accuracy possible, or just a way of recording in writing a tune using musical notes. It is not, as many may think, a way of replacing the performance of a tune.

Some consider these sheet music scores to be a genuine hand from God, as music lovers are able to study various sketches of great works of art, thus having the possibility to follow the creative process that some of the greatest music composers have gone through. And by making such sketches public, musicians can also get feedback from their audience, before putting their final touch on a tune.

Reading these sheet music pieces, requires people to become acquainted with a technique called musical notation. Some of us just can’t do it, while others are gifted with an innate ability to virtually read and record music as they hear it, thus creating sheet music pieces in their mind. This is the initial definition for the expression “to play by ear”. Like any special abilities, they are rare, only few people being able to do this.

Concert band music normally employs the use of music sheets for playing vast tunes. Because a difficult tune has a lot of information, normal people can’t possibly remember all the notes to a tee. They are not only used by classical concert bands, but also by piano players, and even jazz orchestras. However, jazz orchestras only use sheet music pieces that are general, thus leaving space for improvisation.
